Kelly Salmon has a background in biochemistry and cell biology. She also has a long history of developing and coordinating STEM outreach. Dr. Salmon began working with the NHAS teaching a summer session in 2017 before joining full-time as Senior Scientist in 2018. She now leads summer programs, after school programs, professional development for teachers, and outreach to local schools. She is looking forward to continuing to teach students new techniques and fostering excitement in the scientific process.

Alyson Michael is a chemist with a focus on material chemistry. Since joining the NHAS full time in 2020, Alyson has created programs that implement new equipment and placed on emphasis on integrating quantitative methods into student experiments.

Lee Berger is an award-winning researcher and paleoanthropologist. His explorations into human origins in Africa over the past 25 years have resulted in the discovery of more individual fossil hominin remains than any other exploration program in the history of the search for human origins in Africa. Among Berger’s many notable finds, the discoveries of two new species of ancient human relatives are especially noteworthy. In 2008 he found Australopithecus sediba, fossil remains of remarkable completeness that showed an intriguing mix of apelike and humanlike characteristics. In 2013 his team found another new species of ancient human relative, Homo naledi, amid the richest early hominin site yet found in Africa. Berger has served in a number of advisory roles, including the Global Young Academy, the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa, and has chaired the Fulbright Commission. Berger is the Phillip Tobias Chair in Palaeoanthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. A current National Geographic Explorer at Large, Berger won the first National Geographic Society Research and Exploration Prize in 1997. In 2016, he was named the Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year and included in Time magazine’s list of the world’s 100 Most Influential People. [From National Geographic]

Dr. Richard Sherwood is a biomedical scientist with a specialty in human craniofacial biology, growth and development, and quantitative genetics. He holds degrees in Anthropology (U.C. Berkeley) and Biomedical Sciences (Kent State University). He is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the University Of Missouri School Of Medicine. Prior to his current appointment, he held positions at Yale University, The Pennsylvania State University, University of Wisconsin, and Wright State University. His NIH-funded research focuses on creation of individualized predictive models of craniofacial growth designed to assist clinicians in identification of optimal treatment timing. Dr. Sherwood has managed several NIH-Funded projects investigating the genetic and environmental influences on craniofacial form in two human populations. One NIH-Funded project in the US and one in a remote area of Nepal. Dr. Sherwood has also researched non-human primate model (baboon) for craniofacial biology. He is active in a number of studies on childhood skeletal growth, development, and bone accrual.

Dr. Devyani Singh is a Post-Doctoral Economist Fellow working on Energy and Climate policy. her inter-disciplinary research has included energy access & transitions in the Global South, air-quality (GHG emissions accounting), evaluating climate impacts of national policies, natural resource economics, environmental [carbon] finance, forest sustainability, and methane emissions from oil and gas production. As a result, Dr. SIngh has coordinated multiple research projects across sectors (industry, academia, government, Indigenous communities, and non-profits) and countries (India, Canada, US), where she led research design, research execution, and communication (via peer-reviewed papers, reports, presentations, social media etc.).

Outside of academia, Devyani has consulted on carbon markets and policy for New Forests Inc., and worked with the First Nations on non-timber forest products. In the past (until 2010), she also worked as a Senior Financial Analyst for various Fortune 200 companies after obtaining an MBA in Finance. However, inspired by the magnitude and importance of global climate change, she changed career paths and obtained an M.Sc. in Environmental Science, and a Ph.D. in Energy & Climate Policy. Devyani actively promotes engagement with policy makers and the public for evidence-based decision-making.

Dr. Casey Holliday, uses the fossil record, biomechanics, and experimental methods to answer questions regarding the skull of many animals, how tissues move and protect the skeleton, and feeding function, behavior, and evolution. Dr. Holliday’s lab integrates 3D-imaging and modeling applications with classical anatomy techniques. Using anatomical foundation Casey can more accurately analyze cranial function and evolution in living taxa such as lizards, crocodylians, and birds, as well as test functional hypotheses in fossil dinosaurs, crocodyliforms and stem groups. He is heavily engaged in training the next generation of scientists. Taking full advantage of his lab’s unique focus promotes and inspires inquiry among students of all ages. Dr. Holliday hosts educational classes, workshops and online modules for K-beyond groups through his Inside Dinosaurs STEM education & Outreach Program. He manages the Annual Dinosaurs & Cavemen Science Expo each Spring at Rock Bridge High School in conjunction with the Columbia Schools Planetarium. The event shares topics and research with the community through a host of activities and displays.

STRESS! Everyone experiences it, and most of us aren't the greatest at dealing with it. The question our guest, Dr. Zane Thayer from Dartmouth College, is trying to learn more about stress. Mainly how a history of stress can lead to long-term health effects. You'll also learn a few tips for dealing with stress in a healthy way. The news segment will definitely build those stress levels as we talk about bees that will make you think twice about where your honey comes from and a new biological robot that will probably not herald the end to civilization as we know it.

Dr. Zane Thayer is a biological anthropologist interested in understanding how (biological mechanisms) and why (evolutionary origins) environmental experiences shape patterns of human biology and health. One important application of this interest is understanding how social inequalities create health inequalities. As such, her research has focused on evaluating how factors such as poverty, racism, and historical trauma affect health.

Her overall research goal is to contribute findings of interest to both evolutionary anthropologists and public health professionals. She is strongly motivated to increase public understanding of evolution, developmental plasticity, and how the social construction of race/racism can create health inequities.

Join us for our conversation with Dr. Naomi Charalambakis, Associate Director of Science Policy at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, to learn about how animal research informs human health and why it’s important for scientists to advocate for increased federal funding for science. Plus, is greener air travel on the horizon? And can photosynthesis be harnessed to restore nerve function? - these topics are covered in our news segment.

Our Guest:
Naomi Charalambakis, PhD, is a Senior Science Policy Analyst for the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), a coalition of 29 scientific societies collectively representing over 130,000 individual biological and biomedical researchers. In this role, she leads efforts of FASEB’s Animals in Research and Education working group, developing policy statements, tracking congressional legislation and agency directives related to animal use in federal research, and creating resources for the lab animal community. This includes preparing comments to federal Requests for Information. Additionally, Dr. Charalambakis serves as the staff liaison for the FASEB Shared Research Resources Task Force, coordinating with volunteers across the country to guide policy discussions pertaining to core facilities. Dr. Charalambakis launched her policy career at FASEB in November 2018, after graduating with her doctorate in Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology from the University of Louisville School of Medicine where she utilized mouse transgenics to evaluate the role of retinal input on inhibitory interneurons in the visual thalamus. As a PhD Candidate, Dr. Charalambakis spent the summer of 2015 as a science policy intern at Research!America, and co-founded and served as Director of the first science policy University of Louisville student organization.
